The Making of Norwegian Brands in Japan - Business Benkyoukai

Dear members and friends of the Japan-Norway Society,

On March 19th, 2019 the J-NS will host a Business “Benkyoukai” (mini-seminar) with the title:

“The Making of Norwegian Brands in Japan”.

On this occasion we will hear from the founders of “Norwegian Rain” (outdoor clothing) and “Fuglen” (coffee and cocktail bar), share with us the success stories of establishing their brands in Japan.

This is a part of our series of events focusing on presentations and lectures related to Japan-Norway business topics. The aim for JNS is to create an arena to increase your professional knowledge, as well as meet both new acquaintances and potential business partners.

Norwegian Rain is an award-winning designer label with Japan as a major market for their rain wear. The company was founded in Bergen, thereby knowing very well the importance of weather protection but aiming for no compromise on style. Alexander Helle, the creative director of Norwegian Rain, teamed up with designer T-Michael and the concept that is “Norwegian Rain” came to be. It was in Japan they found the best manufacturer of material for their rain wear and in April Norwegian Rain will open its flag ship store in Tokyo.

Fuglen is a Norwegian coffee and cocktail bar that opened in Oslo in 2008, and in 2012 expanded to Shibuya, Tokyo. At that time Fuglen covered a need for high quality coffee in the Japanese capital, as well as introducing the customers to Norwegian retro-design. In September 2018 the second bar opened in the trendy capsule hotel “Nine Hours” in Asakusa in Tokyo. Fuglen has several exclusive customers in Tokyo, including Michelin starred restaurants and pop-up-concepts with Maaemo.

Alexander Helle & T-Michael (Norwegian Rain) and Einar Holthe (Fuglen) run two very different companies. However, they cooperate both in Norway as well as in Japan. Please join us and hear them share the stories and strategies about their unique concepts and what have made them successful in Japan.

Food provided by the prominent Alex Sushi is included in the participation fee.
